The research behind our care. Dr. Scott Mist brings more than 25 years of NIH-funded pain research, advanced systems-science training, and clinical acupuncture experience to every personalized treatment plan at Cascade Mist Acupuncture.
Acupuncture at Cascade Mist is not guesswork dressed up as tradition. It is guided by more than two decades of federally funded clinical research, much of it conducted by Dr. Scott Mist himself.
Dr. Mist holds a PhD in Systems Science from Portland State University, where his work focused on applying statistics and computational methods to whole-systems research in complementary and alternative medicine. He also holds a Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine.
Since 2000, his research has focused on Traditional Chinese Medicine interventions for conditions involving central sensitization, including fibromyalgia, temporomandibular joint disorder, and chronic low back pain.
Portland State University, 2007. Focused on statistical and computational methods for whole-systems research.
Advanced professional training from the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine.
Oregon Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Neurological Disorders, including fMRI and H-MRS neuroimaging.
Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University.
Research leadership at the Helfgott Research Institute.
Focused research in fibromyalgia, TMD, chronic low back pain, and related complex pain conditions.
These selected projects show how Dr. Mist’s research has addressed real clinical questions across pain, neurological sensitivity, pelvic health, and fertility support.

| Acupuncture Augmentation of Lidocaine for Provoked, Localized Vulvodynia | Chronic pelvic pain | Feasibility and acceptability study | Studied a 12-week comparison of traditional and non-traditional acupuncture combined with lidocaine therapy. |
| TMD Diagnostic Calibration Study | Temporomandibular joint disorder | NIH/NCCAM-funded research | Improved diagnostic consistency among TCM practitioners assessing TMD patients. |

Evidence varies by condition. Ethical care means being honest about where findings are strong, where they are limited, and when additional medical support is appropriate.
Most acupuncture clinics can say treatment is evidence-based. Far fewer can point to a body of federally funded, peer-reviewed work conducted by the practitioner designing your care.
At Cascade Mist, research does not replace individualized care. It strengthens it. Your plan is still based on your history, symptoms, priorities, and response to treatment—but it is designed by someone who has spent decades studying which approaches show measurable benefit, for whom, and under what circumstances.
Your health history, symptoms, goals, stress patterns, and previous care are reviewed before a treatment plan is built.
Clinical findings and Traditional Chinese Medicine assessment are considered together to clarify the pattern behind your symptoms.
Treatment methods are selected with attention to current evidence, clinical experience, safety, and your individual needs.
Progress is reviewed over time, and the plan is refined based on changes in pain, function, sleep, and overall well-being.
Clear answers help patients make informed decisions before scheduling care.
The technique follows established Traditional Chinese Medicine principles. What differs is the diagnostic and treatment-planning approach, which is informed by Dr. Mist’s clinical research into point-selection strategies, protocols, and measurable outcomes for specific conditions.
No. Research quality and results vary by condition, and all clinical research has limitations. Dr. Mist’s work is transparent about where evidence is stronger, such as fibromyalgia and chronic pain, and where additional research is still needed.
Yes. Ask during your consultation, or search Dr. Scott Mist’s name through PubMed, Google Scholar, or ResearchGate for publication records and study details.
Research helps inform safe, structured decision-making, but your treatment is not copied from a study. It is personalized according to your symptoms, history, priorities, and response over time.
No ethical medical or complementary-health provider can guarantee outcomes. Research-backed care means treatment choices are made with stronger reasoning, transparency, and attention to measurable progress.
His work has focused on fibromyalgia, chronic low back pain, sciatica-type radiculopathy, TMD, chronic pelvic pain, fertility support, and central sensitization-related conditions.
